Finding a leak is most of the work, and a plumber approaches it by ruling things out rather than opening walls at random. The meter test comes first: everything off, watch the dial, and see whether the house is still using water. That single check separates a supply leak under pressure from a drain leak that only shows up when a fixture runs. From there it's about narrowing. Isolating branches of the system, moisture metering the drywall, and thermal imaging all help locate the wet area before anything gets cut. Older Omaha housing complicates it. Galvanized supply lines that have been in the ground and in the walls since before the war fail at threads and pinholes, and water travels along a joist and appears in a room away from the actual break. Plaster hides a leak far longer than drywall does. Once the plumber has the source, the repair matches the material, and the surrounding pipe gets a look too, because one pinhole in old galvanized rarely stays the only one.

Water follows framing. It runs along the top of a joist or down the face of a stud until something stops it, then it soaks through the ceiling or wall at that point. The visible mark is where gravity gave up, not where the pipe failed.
